I suffer from allergies since I am a kid and I feel that doctors that treat them don't know what they are doing. I've heard that there are so many kinds of allergies like the number of sick people and that the industry doesn't develop treatments because they are better off "treating" us and profiting with our health. Are current allergy treatments a scam?

I don't even know what allergy treatments are. Like yourself, I have plenty of allergies, but it never occurred to me to seek out a doctor because of them. I simply avoid the foods that cause adverse reactions in me. If you don't know what is causing your allergies, you can always go to a naturopath and have a simple allergy test. These days I very rarely get any kind of allergic reactions as I stay away from all the known culprits, and I don't touch processed foods. I only ever get a problem if I eat food that has been prepared by other people where I don't know about all the ingredients they used.

Your doctor did go to many years of medical school and is certified so if you don't believe them I'm not sure who else you can turn to. :p Don't go to the doctor at all, I guess?

What kind of allergy treatments are you talking about specifically? I take medication for allergies and they help/work just fine.

When you talk about "treatments," are you actually referring to medicine that you take that controls the side effects? Like when you take an allergy medicine during an attack to make it stop or the type you take daily to prevent attacks?

I can't really think of any "treatments" that are intended to actually fix the allergies entirely...

I do not think that allergy treatment is really a scam. The treatment I have been taken to avoid dust allergy has been helpful to me in many ways. I thank the doctors for providing me with such great care and lots of hope. I think it is very important that one must have on the doctors that are treating a particular person. If you do not consult a doctor there is no way for the allergy to reduce, hence, it is always good to consult a doctor.

It depends on the allergy itself. Some allergies aren't treatable and all you can do is to apply remedies to keep it from worsening. I have allergic rhinitis and it breaks all hell loose when I get to sniff dust any other offensive smells so I had to always have benadryl's packed in my pocket just in case. Allergies are triggered by something so the only thing you can do is to stay away from those triggers.

I was referring to breathing allergies like asthma and similar. All my life I have fought against breathing issues and I've spend years after years in different sort of doctors with no cure what-so-ever and even improvements, so I do feel scammed, I feel that they don't know what they are doing.

I have yet to have any allergy pill that has worked for me. Everything leaves me just as stuffy and miserable as I was before. However, I went to an Allergist Specialist and he prescribed an inhaler for me to take once a day. It contains a steroid that is absorbed into my lungs. I take a 'puff' in the morning and I'm clear for the entire day without a hiccup. It's wonderful! It's the ONLY thing that works.

I would not mind doing that as well dizzy, taking a pill and going on with my life, the issue is that I've taken dozens and haven't improved, so I envy your luck. Right now I am really skeptical, I am doing my own investigation to see if I can improve my health.

I used to have a weird allergy. Care to guess?

    I was allergic to RAIN.

I was a kid when I had this allergy. Kids love to play in the rain when parents are not at home and I was no different. Anytime I played in the rain, I'd have an adverse reaction — huge, itchy bumps would form on my skin.

The allergy was treated successfully. From the on I could walk in the rain and nothing bad would happen. From my experience I believe that some allergies can be treated.

I don't think that there ever will be cures for allergies. Well, this is only to my knowledge. I think that as we grow older, we just develop a certain resistance to it. I just take antihistamines when I am having an allergy attack.

Asthma is more of an issue that you treat without ever really curing. There's a major different between treatment and permanent cure or solution. If you have asthma, then you'll more than likely have it for life. The same applies to most allergies because they don't go away over time except in limited circumstances, so you're only scamming yourself by thinking that treatments are supposed to cure these issues.

    Uh, not at all.

I can say I'd never would have gotten my asthma under control if I didn't get on these "scam" allergy treatments. When my doctor figured out that allergies would trigger my asthma, they put me on great allergy medication that allowed me to work out without having to worry about an asthma attack. Now, I only use my inhaler when absolutely necessary, when before, I had to use it pretty much every time I tried to workout or even go outside during the Spring.

But I guess you can just not take them if you feel you're getting scammed? I don't know why anyone would want to put themselves through that though.

I've been fighting asthma and allergies for the last 30 years and I do feel scammed because I never got better with conventional treatments, what helped me the most were the alternative treatments, so my faith is in that simpler medicine.

Sorry to hear that you feel modern medicine doesn't work, I feel a specialist should be able to help you out, have you been to one or just to a general practitioner? Those usually just prescribe whatever works for most people.
How effective has traditional medicine been? Does it cure it for a while or just reduce the symptoms?

I have yet to find an allergy medication that works for me. HOWEVER! I visited an allergist to get tested for my allergies and they took my runny nose and congestion very seriously. I was prescribed an inhaler and it works wonderfully! Perhaps what you need is to visit an allergist to get proper treatment.

I have to say with so many allergies I never really thought about going to the doctor for them unless they turned into a bad infection where I can’t bare it. I can say in the pass I have taken my kids to the doctor for allergies and they always prescribe the same medication for all 3 of them. I never understood that but I think that the doctor hands be tied with what they can prescribe for certain things.

I've never heard of anyone being allergic to the rain until now, how can that be? Rain is just water, were you really allergic to rain or just some product that was coming down with the rain? Glad you got cured though. ;)
