I've seen a number of sites where you can register as a book reviewer and each month you'll get one or two books to review. You won't be paid for the review but you get a free book. There is no guarantee though that the book will be interesting but if all you seek is something new to read each month this could save you some money. No, I haven't seen either one of those sites before, but I would love to try it. I found an ad on Craigslist, though, for much the same thing: they will pay you to review books, which is something I would LOVE to get into, since I enjoy both: reading and writing, and it seems like a good combo. I think the whole setup is a good idea. At first glance it seems like it will benefit everyone involved. However, I have my reservations considering the fact that some pay people to write reviews on the free books they receive. This will create book reviews that are biased and made to look positive because the reviewer got paid. Just my two cents.
I don't want to read Tom Dick and Harry. I want to read an author who has a good reputation, I want to read books that is about the topic that interests me. Thus, I will not review books just because I am getting free books. Reading books will take time, writing will take time. I don't want to waste my time doing review for free books. However, I may review if I am paid for reviewing.
I've never thought about reviewing books. It's a great idea for readers though. I love the idea of getting free books and helping out authors who haven't been discovered. I'll definitely check out these sites!
That's a great idea! I love reading and I'm always interested in finding new authors and books, and sometimes I even write reviews on my spare time posting them on different forums. I could kill two birds with one stone, getting the books for free. It's not a big time commitment and it's a nice and enjoyable activity, so I'll give it a try as soon as I have enough time... and as soon as I finish all the books I'm already reading!
I think that I might check this out as well. I do get some free books through Amazon, and then I write a review for those books; but writing the review is not required. Amazon has a program where they give you a selection of books each month, and you can choose whichever one you want to read. If you have Amazon Prime, then the book is free, otherwise, it is $1.99. It is called Amazon Firt, if I remember right, or maybe Kindle First. They send you and email at the beginning of the month and there are about ssix books to choose from, and all are a different genre of book; so there is something for jusst about anyone To choose and enjoy. Are you required to read the books from the companies you mentioned, @Denis Hard , or it is optional whether you read them or not , and then jut review the ones you do read ? I will look into those and see if it would work for me,too. Thank you for letting us know about this option !
One book, one review. For each book that is sent to you, you must writer a review for that book before you move on to the next. I've heard though that book bloggers often have numerous books sent to them so they can review them. Since they don't ask for these books they can read and review only the ones they like. However reviewing books for the sites I mentioned you don't have such freedom.
I have done this before through a company called Writeonpress.com. I don't think they offer it anymore but here is the website if anyone wants to think about researching like options: Log In When I used them, they were focusing on fiction for adult (not adult fiction if that makes sense), but now they are focusing on writing students in University. So there are essay contests and other things that are offered but often someone in my age group doesn't qualify. Sites like these are a great way to gain exposure though as an author.
I think is a good deal if you are deep into genre literature, and enjoy reviewing as much as actually reading them. A nice exchange: honest reviews for free books. If you read and enjoy any genre then you just have found a goldmine, otherwise maybe is not so worth your time.
Well that sounds like a good way to get some motivation to get some good reading done, and any little help there is nice to have for me. I would consider myself somewhat critical too, maybe to a fault, but it would certainly appeal a little more to something like this then just general commentary, which is where I usually experiment, and become sad. I'm not a book junkie, so I doubt I will be interested in this offer. However, I do think that people who love to read anything and everything will no doubt be interested to avail of this offer.
I just checked my email this morning, and there was a request from a writer for me to read and review their book ! ! I have not requested it yet; but I am going to do that. The book is a mystery, and I enjoy those, so I will undoubtedly like like the book, too. I have been writing reviews on Amazon for all of the products that we buy through Amazon, and so every day, I now receive offers in my emails to try out new products and write a review for them. Usually, the item still cost something; but it is discounted; so I just look through the emails and see which products we would actually use. If they are trying to sell me a little bottle of nail polish which is usually $15, and now they want $10, then that email gets deleted. But the book is free, and the description looked interesting; so there is nothing to lose by reading it.
I love this idea - there may be a few duds in the mix, but it might also be a way to discover new literature that may have previously simply gone under a radar. To anyone who has tried this already - is there a deadline for when your review is do? In between jobs I enjoy quite a bit of free time, but when I am hired out, my work days can be quite long and the liberties to enjoy something as simple as reading get filtered out.
Thanks for sharing, @Denis Hard I haven't ever heard of either of these sites, and will have a look to see if they have the kind of books I like to read, and if the eBooks are compatible with my Kindle. I did join a couple some time ago, but it didn't really work out because they both had a limited amount of books to choose from, sadly. I never did get around to reviewing any because of that. I know one has since folded, too.
There are always a lot of books that are free on the Kindle Store, and each day, they put different books on for free for that day; so if you check every day, you will find some good deals on the books you want to read. If you have a specific topic, then you would just type that into the search once you are on the Kindle page of Amazon, and then run the search by price, from low to high. Sometimes a book that was $3-$4 will be free , and only stay that way for about one day, so it is important to keep checking back to see what new books are available for free. Of course, you don't have to write a review for these books; but when you do write book reviews, then authors will actually start sending you their books to read and review, like the ones I have started receiving lately.
Thank you for sharing the bit about authors potentially sending free books to read! I have a tablet that is Kindle enabled, but have yet to really dig in to it. I suppose I am still stuck on traditional books, but the electronic version is slowly becoming more appealing. The few free books I did peruse were not of the best quality, but have you had better experience with finding more interesting reads?
If your tablet has the Kindle app, then that should be all you need to read ebooks, @whysewserious . There are some great books at the Kindle store, and once you start using ebooks, you will really like it. I used to haunt thrift stores and yard sales looking for good books, and then had bags full of the ones I had read to give away to other people who also read a lot of books. Now, I just download the book to my Kindle, read it, and then delete it back off of the Kindle unless it is a book that I want to keep. There is a website called Bookbub.com, and it is free to sign up there. You tell them your preferences in books, and they send you emails every day with books that meet your preferences and are either cheap or free. It is a great way to get new books to read ! You can change your preferences any time you want, so if you are getting too many books offered, then you can narrow it down, and if not enough, then you can expand your preferences. You can also add your favorite authors, and when they have a new book out, then Bookbub will alert you; so you never miss a new book by your favorite writers.
