I guess it totally depends on where we are, or in which country we live, and also the perception we have of what's important for us. I am more comfortable with a car, but I could perfectly live without it, so in that sense is a luxury, a luxury I can afford. Two cars it would be harder, and somewhat unnecessary.
I feel one car is okay if you don't have a large family yet and your income is not that big. I think it's wiser to invest in appreciable assets if you do not have a strong income base yet rather than investing in cars. On the other hand if you are getting fat money monthly maybe you wouldn't have any financial stress managing two cars at a go.
