Sometimes it is really difficult to identify cloned sites and scammers are too smart in copying the original site. They even use the same brand logo and features from the original sites. Small steps like checking the correct address of the site, presence of padlock sign, beginning with https etc. could help us a lot. We can also use plugins like WOT(Web of Trust) which gives a trust score of the site to us while browsing. It is a score based on the reviews given by users.

In case of a suspicious site color of WOT icon changes accordingly. Green means safe, yellow shows moderately safe and red indicates that the site is not at all safe to use.

Have you ever used any extensions like WOT and Avast Web Reputations?

I don't use them. Basically they overwrite the links with their affiliate links. And add no value to your surfing experience. So this can be really bad as well. In such case it's better to avoid giving them so much control over your computer. I have found out that Linux and Mac work just fine and you don't need those virus and antivirus anymore. So better to be sure to avoid such toolbars and stuff.
