I like to toss a handful of sprouts on my sandwich. Usually I get a package of mixed sprouts but lately they have been impossible to find. A while ago a batch of sprouts was tainted with E-coli. As we rarely wash the sprouts before eating, this meant the bacteria had a high probability of entering one's body. The number of occurrences has been low but many stored have take sprouts off the shelves. For me, this means having to forgo sprouts most of the time. As sprouts are a healthy addition to a sandwich, I think our paranoia is unjustified. Sometimes I think we need to weigh the potential good against the bad and make informed decisions. I don't think simply removing an item from the shelves is a solution. Too many items could get contaminated at one time or another - do we take all meat and other foods out of the stores as well?
