My car has been giving very bad fuel efficiency figures lately. So I had it checked out and it seems the pressure plates in the gearbox need to be replaced. Is it better to go to an authorized place or my local mechanic (who is offering to do it for nearly half the cost. ) My main concern is the safety aspect, as the car is already out of warranty.

Any time there is an issue with a vehicle and it involves replacing parts other than windshield wipers or fluids I personally would have the repair done by an authorized repair shop. It's not that I wouldn't trust a local mechanic but a reputable one has a lot standing behind it than a local one. If you chose a local mechanic it would be best to check with the Better Business Bureau to see if there have been any complaints filed against the business or seek out recommendations from close associates that you know.
