I've done a lot of research and if I want to buy a DSLR then I have to spend at least $500 to purchase one brand new. However, I was browsing around Amazon and found cameras for about $250 to $300, but they're used. What do you think? Is it a good idea to buy these types of cameras used? Or should I fork over an extra $300 and buy brand new?
It depends on a lot of factors: -what are you using it for? Recreational use? Professional use? -do the used sellers offer any warranty? I sold one very expensive camera a number of years ago that had 3 years left of a transferable warranty -what shape is the lens in? - what kind of use has the used camera been through? - if you buy new, what kind of warranty will you get? -can you afford to buy new?
Always carefully read the description of the camera for defects, accessories, warranty if any and shipping. Then go to the seller's page and read reviews by other customers and also check the return policy and and contact information. I like to see a phone contact. In the end, if what you get isn't what is stated, the seller is obligated by Amazon to promptly issue a refund. I have had to pursue this only one time, which is great. When the seller doesn't act, Amazon implements its A to Z refund policy and they will issue a refund. Hopefully, it won't be needed, but it's there if it is.
If it comes to cameras, buy a new one. Cameras are somehow sensitive and there might be a reason why the owner is selling it, it could be faulty and in the end your loss. You may not notice it from the start but once you get to learn how to shoot and see what good and noot, you'll realize the cameras seem faulty.
