Are tablets really that worth getting? Or should I just save up for a laptop?

I know tablets are more portable, easier to use and etc. but am not really a "app person" but more of a gamer.

So guys, should I get one? If so, what should I get?

Any suggestions is welcomed and greatly appreciated!

You could get a combo of both? They have really nice and affordable touchscreen laptops these days.

If you are not really an app person then I would recommend getting a laptop. They are much better for graphics-heavy games and have better performance power.

If you are a gamer than you definitely want a laptop. There are some really lightweight laptops available, and some aren't much larger than a tablet, but much more versatile.

Unless your idea of a video game is Candy Crush then get a laptop- and make sure it has good specs if you're going to be using it for video games, entry level laptops have difficulty with this.

It is your personal preference. I used to have a very nice tablet until I went back to using my laptop again. Typing is very painful because I always, always make mistakes, which I can type much faster both on my smartphone and laptop with minimal errors. I don't really see the point of having a tablet now because I would prefer having a physical keyboard. The touchscreen laptop is a good gadget, but can be expensive because it is the best of two worlds, which there is a touchscreen and physical keyboard.

I have always wanted a touchscreen laptop. Do you have any suggestion?

To me, tablets are largely a waste of time. They are just one extra device that I have to remember to keep charged along with my laptop and cell phone. The storage on them is too little to rely upon as a main computer, and the absence of a keyboard or mouse makes them uncomfortable and impractical to use for anything productive. They are largely just entertainment devices imo. Plus the shelf life on them is like a year max, after which the manufacturers basically abandon them and don't push out any updates of Android to them anymore. A laptop will last you a solid 3 years if not more.

Laptops are a lot more versatile than tablets. If you aren't in it for the apps, just get a laptop. You can download some emulator apps on a tablet and even play with a controller, yes, but you can do that and a lot more with a laptop.

I would recommend you getting a laptop.

But getting a tablet for everyday needs could be a nice investment for anyone, including you, especially with affordable prices they hold these days. And I'm sure there will even be some discounts, since it's Christmas and New Year's almost, so you might look into that (for a laptop as well).

I think they're a waste. The things they're more convenient for are a waste of TIME too. Just my opinion, I obviously don't have one or know how they could possibly be better than a laptop. Not to mention how terrible it is to type on a screen, but some people get used to it and prefer it for some reason. I will never buy a tablet.

Well the Sony Vaio Fit, Asus x200CA and HP Pavillion touchsmart all spring to mind (off the top of my head at least) and speaking as a gadget nerd they're all pretty awesome. Speaking as a computer scientist however, they're not so great. They work okay for desktops, but touchscreen is really just a gimmick on laptops. The screen will only last about a year (on average) before you either start having problems with it, or it breaks completely, and these are a lot harder to replace than a standard laptop screen and it can even be cheaper to buy a new laptop than get it repaired. Given that the average life span of a computer should be around 3 years, I would jsut stick to what works if I were you. It's not worth losing money on a gimmick.

Honestly, it really depends on what you want to use your tablet for. Tablets are really portable and easy to use. You said you were a gamer, what kind of games do you like playing? If you like playing games with heavy graphic loads, I would recommend a computer. But, if you really want a laptop- I would suggest buying laptops designed to game with. Fair warning though- they are really expensive.

I would say get the combo and you can have the best of both worlds! There are a few choices in the combos as well. I think it is the Surface that is really neat and does anything both a laptop and tablet can do!

The only kind of tablet I have is a kindle fire.

I bought it because I wanted to play flash video from other various sites. There really isn't a big deal about tablets and I just view them as touch screen PC monitors. I would rather buy a laptop or netbook which could do more and at times with the least amount spent.

What do you intend to do with the gadget anyway? If you want something that you can use to type in order to make certain documents and other work related stuff, then a laptop or netbook is the way to go. But if you want something that you can use to simply browse the internet, read eBooks, play games on the go with a tablet. The main advantage of a tablet is that it is easier to carry around than a laptop. But the laptop has more uses IMO.

For me, tablets are like portable media players only, like you can read or watch movies conveniently, but they are too underpowered in general. It would be more worth it to spend money on a laptop that is far more superior specs wise than a tablet. You can't even type easily with the keys!

I use both a tablet and laptop.

The laptop is purely for productivity and work while the tablet is for entertainment (ie. it's comfortable reading and watching from the tablet while in the bed)

Personally, I believe they complement each other rather well in this respect.

Portability is something that's already mentioned which is handy with tablets though my mobile phone in some ways already cover that aspect - mobile phones have become so powerful nowadays that it's almost like having portable computing in your fingertips.

If you are a gamer, trust me, you need a laptop. Tablets are kind of cool and modern but may not respond well to gaming. Laptops have better controls when it comes to interactive games and 3D games. Hardware capability of laptops cannot be compared with tablets. A full fledged laptop is much more than two or so tablets. Spill the cash on a laptop, probably a duo-core or a high icore. forget the tablet thing.

one more thing, when it comes to gaming, two things do really matter: power reservoir and the control capability. laptop keys offer a wide range of functions, movement and controls quite beyond the single-control of a tablet; the touchscreen. laptop is incomparable to a tablet in this regard. go for it!!

In my opinion, it entirely depends on your personal needs. If you need a device for browsing the internet, listening music, watching movies and casual gaming, I would recommend you to buy a tablet. But tablets are more of a consumption device. If you want to create stuff, i.e, code, database, documents, etc, I would recommend you to save up and buy a proper laptop.
