For modern PC games, yes - but you also have to be careful you don't end up getting a laptop with a weak GPU. For gaming, you'd want one with a dedicated graphics chip; I'd recommend something with at least the power of an NVidia GTX 760M.

As for gaming for the tablet; I'm somewhat surprised by how powerful those SOC chips are for games. Even if you're not into hardcore gaming then tablets are pretty great for casual games as well.

If you aren't an app person then you definitely do not want the tablet. If you want full software, and the ability to play PC games then the laptop is the way to go. I would recommend a laptop, if you really NEED the portability then a tablet could be an option but remember that laptops are pretty much just as portable.

It really depends on what you need to get done. I use my laptop for school, work, and personal use. I can do way more on my laptop than on my tablet. My tablet is only used for playing games on a few of my favorite apps, browsing on the web, and posting on social networks. However, all of this can also be done on my laptop plus more. Therefore, you would have to figure out exactly what you will be doing and determine whether or not a tablet or a laptop would be more beneficial.

Personally I think if you have a smartphone, there is no need to get a tablet. Essentially a tablet is a larger version of a smartphone and can be used mainly for presentations. Other than that, they are not important. You can just stick to your laptop so long as it can access internet connectivity you will be fine.

I think that it depends a lot of your lifestyle, if you are someone that needs to be connected permanently to the net and do some work connected a tablet is a need, but as mike says a smartphone might do the trick as well.

I personally don't have need for neither as those devices, as I am most of the time near to a laptop or desktop and that is much more convenient to me than a tablet.
