One way most travelers waste money when they are traveling is attempt to visit too many places in a region they are visiting when it would be more enjoyable to choose just one great spot and spend most of your time their. For example if you are visiting Thailand there's no need to travel all over the country. Visit two or three cities and spend more time in them. Get to know the cities, the culture — enjoy yourself and save a lot of money in the process.
I've always been a person who prefers a few places over a whistlestop tour, but it depends on the person. Some people feel they have done more by going to multiple places with a tour, but that's because they just want the photo and to say they have been there. It's a different kind of tourism, either a tourist or as a traveler. I can imagine if you travel with small children or older people it would be harder, but I always think you should choose where you visit and decide how long to stay in each place.
To be fair - I don't think its quite as simple as that - particularly as there is no one size fits all when it comes to holiday choices and therefore as they are generally very much an individual thing - what one person sees as a waste money others may not - for example - for those whose idea of a great holiday is to spend their entire holiday staying in one place lying on the beach all day - they would not see that as a waste of money - as they are getting enjoyment out of what they have paid for - whereas if they were to spend an entire holiday visiting lots of different places and doing quite the opposite of what they wanted - that to them would be a total waste of money - as they would not be enjoying what they had paid for.
I always wanting to go on a backpacking trip to Europe and visit as many countries as I could. However, I'm not sure if this is as I get older or just that I started thinking about it more, but I actually don't think anymore that it would be nice to be only a couple days in one given country or city. If I'm travelling somewhere I want to get to know the place better! See their culture, try their foods, go around and explore. I don't think I would be able to do that in one or two days. So I would prefer to be at least 4 or 5 days in one place instead of going to several places.
We stick to the country's good spots when we go on a tour. But there was a time we went to Hongkong and hied off to Macau on that 1-hour ferry ride. The Macau tour is just one day and we were on our own visiting the casinos there. But our 4-day stay in Hongkong afforded us to roam around Disneyland and Ocean Park plus some other good places.
I have been traveling a lot in the last 15 years, and as I get older, I prefer to concentrate on the places and activities that really interest me. I don't need to see all the tourist attractions in a place. In fact, I try to steer clear of them whenever possible. If I get a chance to visit such places during quiet times, or even at night when most visitors have gone home, I am quite happy, but I don't necessarily need to be there at all. I rather explore places off the beaten track.
Ideally I’d like to be able to experience both methods in my life. And fortunately for me I’m mostly interested in Europe, which is small enough that I could possibly do both (at least, if I ever raise the funds, haha). It’d probably be more practical indeed for me to visit just the two or three highest-priority countries and really dig in during my time there. Can’t say I would complain about that! But there are sights all over Europe I would like to see, so a little bit of tourism has its place too.
I prefer to spend more time in one place as well just because I don't like feeling like I'm rushing myself too much when I'm on vacation. I think it defeats the purpose if you try to push yourself too far just to finish your plans because the whole point of going to vacation is to relax. I understand why some people prefer it though since they value seeing sights a lot more over relaxation but personally I prefer relaxation over it.
I honestly don't see the point in travel if you're just going to stick to one spot. To each their own, I guess. I mean, if you're actually there to absorb the culture, it's never a waste.. but we live on a very big planet that I want to know ALL about and will never have the time to fully explore.. I'll want to move around if I ever get started. I'll be hiking most of it too lol.
I prefer moving from one place to another, as often, surprisingly, staying in one place can cost more money. Travel may cost a little more, but I find it better to go from place to place and see as much as you can, rather than stay in one place. Staying in one place for too long may prove to actually be a waste of money in the end if you didn't enjoy it and got bored of the same things over and over when you know you could have seen more.
I have to agree. When I travel I prefer to stay in one spot longer and thoroughly visit a spot than only have a short stay and move on. I don't feel like I really got to know a place if you only a few days. This is part of the reason why I don't want to do a cruise. My husband I went to Hawaii for our honeymoon and rather than visit all the island we chose to spend a week in Kauai and a week in Maui. We really enjoyed putting roots down in a place for a week and then we were able to take advantage of a rental car for a week on each island. We were also able to relax and unpack as we knew we were staying put for 7 days in one hotel.
I travel in little bits so I can spend more time in one and really soak up the culture and sites. I avoided those European tours that cover like 10 cities because I wanted to be able to spend time in the cities. Like saved Italy for one vacation of 10 days alone because there is so much to see there.
I agree with you in this way travelers can save time and money too. Because it is not possible to travel all over the region in three or four days because in this way you will get tired and spoil the real charm of your journey. Moreover in this way we can know more about that city or destination.
I much prefer to go to only a couple of places to get a proper feel of them. I find you're able to save money, have fun, not exhaust yourself and actually see something of the places if you do it that way. So in that regard, I totally agree with rock123. I wouldn't want to go somewhere, spread myself too thin and not even be able to remember much of the places I visited. I'd rather just return and visit other places, but then if I enjoyed it a lot, I'd probably want to go back to where I had the most fun. What can I say, I'm a creature of habit
I prefer to stay in one spot longer. Usually we establish a 'base camp' and then venture forth for a lot of activities in the extended area. It allows us to take advantage of cheaper mid-week pricing and check groupon for reduced fee options and also find the free things to enjoy in the area, like hiking in state parks. I also like a lot of downtime when I travel. I want time by the pool or on the beach and time to read in a hammock. I don't find a whirlwind trip with a packed itinerary to be very restful.
I definitely prefer to stay in one spot longer too, as many others have said. I mean I do like the variety that most likely comes from going to lots of different spots. But I don't like to move around a lot. I like to just go to one place with a goal in mind and let that be that. But if that one spot doesn't have what you are looking for then I will move around. I just prefer not to.
Same! I really dislike going to places because I "have to." Just because I'm going to New York doesn't mean I have to wait in line for the Eiffel Tower for 3 hours just to get a quick view. I'm going to spend my time where I want to and enjoy it. And of that means spending a lot of time at a local pizza joint, then so be it! If I love the atmosphere, I'm spending my time a lot better than waiting in a dumb line.
When I travel I like to have one or two special places that I want to visit and spend as much time at those places as I can without running to one more place and being so tired that I really do not enjoy what I have seen.
Yap this is the best way to enjoy more and to get more benefits from traveling. I also love to spend time on a place and spend time there. When I am in a city, i just wanna enjoy it's all local and populous one destinations. Prefer to meet local and travel through local sources, this is the best way to explore required region. But it doesn't mean that I ignored others. I add them to my bucket list and plan to go there next time.
What can people have such a great time around the world a lot ahead? I would like to say that exploring one place in depth must be charming instead of exploring many places by just watching from outside. Log In would be amazing.
