What Is the Cosmological Cause of Earthquakes?

    I bet if I asked 'the Internet' about earthquakes, it would just tell me "the tectonic plates do it!"

    But where did THOSE come from? When the Earth was originally developing from the gravitational pull of the ancient stardust, what caused the tectonic plates to form?
